The Caregivers Advancement Fund was created to provide a safety net for home care workers and to promote higher education. The CAF is a non-profit charitable Fund formed under the 501(c)(3) charter of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan Counties. The CAF distributes grants and interest-free microloans to caregivers and their families in the New York City area, covering emergent needs such as housing, transportation, childcare, utilities, and legal expenses. The Fund also supports continuing education, including certificate-based and advanced courses to help increase the pool of skilled home care workers in our communities. Furthermore, the CAF grants higher education scholarships for children of caregivers seeking careers in healthcare, public service, social work, criminal justice, and related fields.
Caregivers have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, as they deal with the threat of infection at home, in the community, and at client sites. Moreover, as a profession, caregiving is often overlooked and not given the credit it is due. Caregivers are among the most compassionate and dedicated workers in our country, serving those who cannot care for themselves, including elders in the last phase of their lives. They are the true “invisible heroes.”
The CAF is governed by an expert Advisory Committee, which includes Tina Chang (Founder and CEO, Pioneering Collective), Carlos Garcia (President, Eng Garcia Properties), Scott Lasky (Founder, Lionhead Wealth Management), and Zubin Kapadia (Founder and CEO, Right at Home North Shore Long Island).
