Two graduating seniors of Monroe-Woodbury High School were awarded scholarships on May 28 from the Justin T. Dimino Memorial Scholarship, and the Susan Gunther Memorial Scholarship, charitable funds administered through the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan.

The Justin T. Dimino Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by Justin’s family to honor and memorialize Justin who passed away suddenly on January 9, 2011 at the age of 16. Justin Dimino was in his junior year at Monroe-Woodbury High School at the time of his passing. According to Justin’s family, he was a boy who lit up the room with his smile and personality. Justin was the starting defensive back for the Championship Crusader Football Team at Monroe-Woodbury High School.

The 2013 Justin Dimino Memorial Scholarship recipient is:

  • Justin Kaffenberger

Recipients of the Justin T. Dimino Memorial Scholarship were selected based on the recommendation of the Monroe-Woodbury High School football coach, and an essay indicating why being an athlete and a member of the Varsity Football Team of MWHS will benefit him in the future.

The family of Susan Gunther established the Susan Gunther Memorial Scholarship Fund as a way to keep her memory alive and vibrant.  Susan Gunther passed away in a car accident on May 30, 2011. Susan initiated the first environmental club in the elementary school and was passionate about the environment.  She inspired her students to respect and honor the environment.  It is our hope that this scholarship fund will honor and celebrate her life and legacy,” said Tim Gunther, Susan’s husband.

The 2013 Susan Gunther Memorial Scholarship recipient is:

  • Jacob Centra

Recipients of the Susan Gunther Memorial Scholarship were selected based on criteria such as, the student being a member of the National Honor Society and a minimum GPA of 3.5. Special Consideration was given to those applicants that were involved in remediating an environmental issue.
