Community Foundation Facilitates $10,500 in scholarship awards at Newburgh Free Academy through four charitable funds

Graduating seniors of Newburgh Free Academy were awarded $10,500 in scholarships on May 30th from charitable funds administered through the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan; the David S. MacFarland Scholarship, the Carly Fund Scholarship, the Archie Stewart Newburgh Rotary Scholarship, and the Richard P. O’Beirne Memorial Foundation Scholarship.

 The 2013 David S. MacFarland recipients are:

  • Samantha Marone  $1,000
  • Savannah Kniffin    $500

The David S. MacFarland Scholarship was established by David S. MacFarland with donations from family, friends, and the business community in honor of his retirement on June 30, 2011.The scholarship is awarded to graduating students who plan to study business, finance, or accounting full time immediately after graduation from NFA at Orange County Community College (SUNY Orange), Mr. MacFarland’s alma mater.

The 2013 Carly Fund Scholarship recipients are:

  • Hannah Fleckenstein  $1,000
  • Austin Stewart             $1,000

Recipients of the Carly Fund Scholarship are selected based on GPA, participation on at least two varsity sports teams, and involvement in volunteer and community service activities.

The Carly Fund Scholarship was created to celebrate the life of Carly Marie Sigelbaum who tragically lost her life on October 17, 2008 as a way to keep Carly’s love for others alive and vibrant. This fund provides scholarships to graduating students from Newburgh Free Academy, where Carly would have graduated in 2017.

The 2013 Archie Stewart Rotary Scholarship recipient is:

  • Danielle Pacella   $4,000: $1,000 per year for 4 years

The Archie Stewart Rotary Scholarship was created to provide scholarships to students graduating from Newburgh Free Academy; applicants must display a high degree of good moral character and community involvement, and must demonstrate an interest in improving the greater Newburgh area following graduation from college in accordance with the wishes of the late Archie Stewart.

The 2013 Richard P. O’Beirne Memorial Fund Scholarship recipients are:

  • Monserrat Herrara   $1,500
  • Sherida Bryce            $1,500

The Richard P. O’Beirne Memorial Foundation Scholarship was created to celebrate, honor, and continue Mr. O’Beirne’s work; he dedicated his professional life to improving the lives of the citizens of the Hudson Valley.  Mr. O’Beirne was focused on the betterment of the surrounding community and this scholarship fund reflects his vision; this opportunity is for two Newburgh Free Academy seniors who have made a positive contribution to the Hudson Valley through school, community involvement, athletics, volunteerism, church activities, or family life. Richard P. O’Beirne was a 1958 graduate of NFA and a long-time resident of the Hudson Valley area.

Recipients of the Richard P. O’Beirne Memorial Foundation Scholarship are selected based on essay questions, GPA, acceptance to a New York State University, and positive consideration was given to applicants who demonstrated citizenship, service, and leadership to the school/community.
